SEE THE NIGHT SKY AS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE
The night skies here are some of the darkest that most people will ever see. Countless stars, the milky way stretching from horizon to horizon, planets, shooting stars, comets and the northern lights are all visible.
A visit to the observatory inspires people of all ages and backgrounds with a sense of wonder at the witness and beauty of the heavens and revelation of mans place within the universe.
The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory occupies a fantastic hilltop site on the edge of the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park. This publicly accessible educational observatory has some of the darkest skies in the UK and has Four large telescopes through which to observe the night sky.
The Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park was the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and Europe and was awarded ‘Gold Tier’ status by the International Dark-Sky Association.
The observatory features a 20” Corrected Dall Kirkham telescope in a 5 metre dome and a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for a more hands-on, open air observing experience. It also has a 10″ telescope and 8″ telescope, both on Dobsonian mounts for manoeuvrability.
