Nature: A Landscape Coming Back To Life

Native woodland, wetland, heather moor and dark-sky nights, Craigengillan sits within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, and it shows.

Ness Glen gorge

Woodland and water

New native woodland climbs the slopes above the Doon while ancient specimen trees anchor the parkland. In the gorge of Ness Glen, ferns and mosses hang in the spray of the river, a temperate rainforest in miniature.

Wetlands and hill lochs stitch the high ground together, alive with waders in spring and wild trout all year.

A red squirrel on the estate

The living estate

Highland cattle and organic sheep graze the in-bye ground, managed for wildlife as much as for the flock. Red squirrels, otters and barn owls are neighbours here; walk quietly and the estate will introduce you.

Star trails wheeling over the estate

Dark skies

The estate borders the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, the first in the UK. On a clear night the Milky Way arches over Loch Doon, and meteor showers are a house speciality, no equipment required beyond a blanket.

Craigengillan is waiting
